Who We Are

Traditionally we come out of the Anglican Church of England, where our founding father, Rev. John Wesley was a priest in the 18th century.  He sought to renew the church in his time, and took his preaching on the road, via horseback, to the byways of England and later to the U.S.  This Spirit took hold in the U.S. and we became the “Methodist” church, because we had certain methods (ways) of organization.

Today we still live by both personal and social holiness (works of piety and works of mercy).  We believe that God’s divine (prevenient) grace comes before we are even aware of it and prepares us for God’s forgiveness and a holy life.   We are justified by our faith which sets us free from sin and provides the healing we need.  We are offered a new life and new birth in Christ and are given the assurance that we are beloved children of God.  In our day-to-day lives, God’s sanctifying grace continually enfolds us.

We follow three simple rules: do no harm, do good, and stay in love with God.  We believe that the living core of the Christian faith is primarily revealed in Scripture first, then illumined by tradition, vivified in personal experience, and confirmed by reason.  We still seek to renew and make alive the teaching of Jesus Christ in our churches for the transformation of the world.

The vision of Deerfield United Methodist Church is “Connecting to God, Serving Others.”  We do this through Passionate Worship, Intentional Faith Development (Children & Adults), Risk Taking Mission and Radical Hospitality.
